Why is viburnum considered a symbol of Ukraine?

A viburnum bush has always been a mandatory attribute of a peasant village. This plant has always been of great value to Ukrainians. Viburnum was usually perceived as a sign of well-being, family well-being, and over time became a national treasure of Ukraine.

Of course, our country has officially recognized attributes of statehood – a flag, an anthem on the coat of arms. However, there is something else in our life – something that has been revered by the people since time immemorial is passed down from generation to generation. And it is viburnum that is the symbol that has strong associations with the Ukrainian land.

Since ancient times, this plant has been treated with respect, because for us it is a kind of Phoenix, which is constantly reborn. Covering itself with white balls-inflorescences in the spring, the viburnum connects its name with the heavenly light – Kol. In addition, the symbolism of the Sun is also traced in the shape of berries, the stones of which are also round.

In ancient times, Ukrainians subordinated their day to the solar cycle. They met the sunrise, saw it off in the evening over the horizon. The color of the berries was associated with blood, the early bloom – with the bride. Medicinal properties of the plant are also known, which more than once saved our ancestors from dysentery, cough, blood diseases, etc.

Viburnum was extremely loved by Ukrainian girls. The skin was nourished with berry juice, which gave a natural blush to the cheeks. Branches of the plant were woven into wreaths, including even wedding ones.
