Wax wreaths: tradition, modern knitted wreaths HISTROV for brides
Wax wreaths: a tradition revived in modern times
Wax wreaths are a special part of Ukrainian wedding tradition, symbolizing purity, tenderness, and girlish beauty. Once upon a time, wax wreaths were created by hand from wax, forming each petal separately. Such wreaths required delicate storage, because over time the material changed: turned yellow, lost its shape, and became brittle.
Despite this, craftsmen still recreate authentic wax wreaths today, preserving the heritage of generations.
Modern interpretation from HISTROV
The HISTROV team, exploring museum archives and going on expeditions across Ukraine, was inspired by the tradition of wax wreaths and created a modern interpretation – knitted wreaths, the shape of which resembles wax ones.
This is a delicate replica that preserves the shape of flowers and petals, characteristic of ancient wax wreaths.
Each wreath is handmade with the finest crochet from natural threads. We create two knitted strips that, when worn on the head, form a voluminous silhouette that is visually as close as possible to a classic wax wreath.
This design allows you to achieve lightness, elegance, and comfort in wearing.
Advantages of modern solutions
Unlike authentic wax wreaths, HISTROV knitted wreaths are much more practical:
- easy to store
- do not deform
- they can be carefully ironed
- can be starched to maintain the perfect shape
This is a modern solution for brides who value the tradition of wax wreaths but choose convenience.

How wax wreaths were made: an authentic process

In ancient times, making a wax wreath was a painstaking and almost jewelry-like process that required patience, precision, and experience. Such a wreath was created by hand, step by step, without haste.
First, the material was prepared – beeswax. It was cleaned of impurities and carefully melted in a water bath to preserve its plasticity and natural color. Sometimes natural dyes were added to the wax, but most often it was left light or milky white – as a symbol of purity, characteristic of wax wreaths.
Next, the craftswoman formed the petals. Thin layers of warm wax were applied to special molds or manually pulled out with her fingers, creating delicate, almost transparent elements.
Each petal had to be the same thickness so that the flower looked harmonious, as in traditional wax wreaths.
After that, the petals were collected into flowers. They were carefully connected, often using thin wire or thread as a base.
The centers of the flowers could be supplemented with small wax balls or beads.
The next stage was the creation of the composition. Ready-made flowers, buds, and decorative elements were attached to the base of the wreath – a hoop or a flexible wire structure.
Each element was arranged to form a symmetrical and three-dimensional ornament, characteristic of wax wreaths.
The final step was decoration. Wax leaves, sometimes ribbons or textile elements, were added to the wreath. The product was left to cool and to set its shape.
Such wax wreaths must require special storage: they were protected from heat, sun, and mechanical damage.
Over time, the wax could change color and become more fragile, so authentic wax wreaths that have survived to this day have a characteristic shade and fragile texture.
The process of creating wax wreaths was not only a craft, but also part of a ceremonial culture — it combined aesthetics, symbolism, and respect for tradition.
